United Price Drop After Booking: How to Get the Difference as Credit

Quick answer

If you see a United price drop after booking, you can usually get the difference back as a United Future Flight Credit (FFC), as long as your ticket is Economy or higher (not Basic Economy). United dropped change fees on most standard tickets. When you change to the same flight at a lower price, or to a cheaper one, the leftover value becomes travel credit. It doesn't come back to your card. Basic Economy can't be changed after the 24-hour window, so it rarely qualifies.

Note: United's own pages returned errors to our checker on Oct 11, 2026. The rules below match United's published policy as reported by several outlets, but confirm the details on united.com's travel credit page and in your fare rules before you act.

Who qualifies for a United fare drop credit

You're in good shape if:

  • Your ticket is Economy, Premium Plus, Business/Polaris or First (anything except Basic Economy). These fares have no change fee on most itineraries, per United's flexible booking options.
  • You booked with United directly, on united.com or the app. Travel agency and OTA tickets usually have to go through whoever sold them.
  • The new price is for the same flights and cabin, or for a cheaper flight you'd actually take.

You probably won't get anything if:

  • You're in Basic Economy past the 24-hour mark. See United Basic Economy.
  • The drop is smaller than the hassle. There's no fee, but a $6 drop may not be worth the time.

The 24-hour rule: United's refund policy allows a full refund to your original payment if you cancel within 24 hours of buying, when the ticket was bought at least 7 days before departure. If the fare drops inside that window, cancelling and rebooking is the cleanest fix, and it works on Basic Economy too.

Step by step: claim a United price drop yourself

  1. Confirm the drop. Search the exact same flights, date and cabin on united.com in a private window. Note the fare class if you can (it's in the fare details).
  2. Open your trip. Go to My Trips on united.com or in the app and choose Change flight.
  3. Pick the same flight. The tool sometimes won't let you pick the flight you're already on. If that happens, travelers report three workarounds that generally work:
  4. change to a different flight and then back again (two changes, both free on eligible fares);
  5. use United's chat in the app and ask an agent to reprice the ticket;
  6. cancel for a Future Flight Credit and rebook right away, using the credit. The flights could sell out between steps, so watch out.
  7. Check the residual. United should show the difference as a credit before you confirm. Screenshot it.
  8. Find your credit. Your FFC appears under Travel credits in your MileagePlus account. You can also look it up with your confirmation number on the travel credit page.

Booked with miles? Award prices drop too. If the mileage price on your exact flight falls, you can usually rebook at the lower price and get the extra miles back. Most travelers do this through the app or by phone. Check your award rules for redeposit terms.

The catch: Basic Economy, credit vs cash, and expiry

Basic Economy. No changes after 24 hours. You can cancel for a credit, but United takes out a cancellation charge first. Reports put it around $49.50 each way for domestic trips and more for international. If the fare drop is smaller than that charge, you lose money. Check your fare rules.

Credit, not cash. A drop on a non-refundable ticket comes back as a Future Flight Credit, not a refund to your card. Only fully refundable fares return money to your original payment.

Expiry and names. FFCs carry a "travel by" date, generally 12 months from when the original ticket was issued. The new credit doesn't get a fresh year. FFCs belong to the traveler named on the original ticket and generally can't be transferred. So check the expiry against how often you fly United.

Partner and mixed tickets. If your itinerary includes partner flights, repricing gets messier and may need an agent.

How to watch your United fare automatically

The hard part isn't the claim. It's noticing the drop. United fares move often, and most people never check again after booking.

Fareward watches it for you. Forward your United confirmation to [email protected]. Fareward checks the fare on your same flights and cabin. If the price drops, it files with United as your agent, with no airline password needed. The difference lands in your account as United travel credit, and you keep that credit.

Watching is free. Fareward charges 20% of the savings, and only after a credit actually lands. If nothing drops, or the fare rules don't allow a claim, you pay nothing. It's airline credit, not cash, so it works best if you fly United again within the credit's life.

You can also check manually once a week, or set a fare alert on a search engine for your route. That works too; it just takes discipline.

FAQ

Does United refund the difference if the price drops after I book? On most non-refundable tickets, United gives you the difference as a Future Flight Credit, not cash. Fully refundable fares can return money to the original payment. Within 24 hours of booking (if bought 7+ days out), you can cancel for a full refund.

Does a United price drop work on Basic Economy? Generally no. Basic Economy can't be changed after the 24-hour window. Cancelling for credit comes with a fee that often wipes out the savings.

Why won't united.com let me select my same flight? The online tool doesn't always offer your current flight. Try United's in-app chat, or change to another flight and back. Both are free on eligible fares.

How long is a United Future Flight Credit good for? Generally 12 months from when the original ticket was issued, shown as a "travel by" date. Check the exact date in your account.

Can I use my United credit for someone else? Future Flight Credits are generally tied to the original traveler. Check the credit's terms in your MileagePlus account.

What if the award (miles) price drops? You can usually rebook at the lower mileage price and get the difference back in miles. Check your award's terms.

Is there a tool that tracks United price drops for me? Yes. Fareward watches your booked United fare for free and files for the credit if it drops, keeping 20% only if a credit lands.
