Cheapest Day to Fly in the US: What the Data Says
Quick answer
Unlike the day you book, the day you fly really does move the price. Google's 2026 analysis of five years of Google Flights data found that departing on a Monday and returning on a Tuesday or Wednesday saved about 14% versus weekend trips, and up to 20% on domestic trips versus departing and returning on Sunday. Expedia's 2026 Air Hacks report found Tuesday was the cheapest day to fly domestically in the US, averaging 14% less than Sunday departures.
So for US domestic travel, midweek wins and Sunday is usually the most expensive.
The data side by side
| Source | Cheapest to fly | Most expensive | Saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google (2026, 5 years of data) | Depart Mon, return Tue/Wed | Weekend; Sun–Sun domestic | ~14%; up to ~20% domestic |
| Google (2024, 4 years of data) | Mon, Tue or Wed | Fri, Sat or Sun | ~13%; ~20% excluding international |
| Expedia Air Hacks 2026, US domestic | Tuesday | Sunday | ~14% |
| Expedia Air Hacks 2026, US overall | Friday | Sunday | ~8% |
Note the Expedia "Friday" result: across all US departures including international, Expedia found Friday cheapest. For domestic trips, it was Tuesday. Different data, slightly different winners, but every source puts Sunday at or near the top on price.
Why midweek is cheaper
Airlines price to demand. Leisure travelers want to leave Friday or Saturday and come back Sunday, so those flights fill up and the cheapest fare buckets sell out first. Business travel concentrates on Monday mornings and Thursday or Friday evenings. Tuesday and Wednesday sit between those peaks, so there are more empty seats and more low fares left.
Other ways to fly cheaper
- Take a connection. Google found nonstop tickets cost about 20% more on average than connecting itineraries.
- Book inside the window. Domestic fares have been lowest about 39 days out on average (22–57 days). See best time to buy plane tickets.
- Don't obsess over the booking day. The day you click "buy" moves the price only a percent or two. See cheapest day to book a flight.
- Check nearby airports and the date grid. Google Flights' Dates and Price graph views show which travel dates are cheapest.
- Fly early or late. First flights of the morning and late-evening departures often price differently from midday flights. This varies by route, so check the results for yours.
Can you change to a cheaper day after booking?
Often yes, on standard economy fares booked directly with a US airline that has dropped change fees. You pay any difference if the new flight costs more, and keep the difference (usually as credit) if it costs less. Basic economy usually can't be changed. Rules by airline:
- United price drop after booking
- Delta price drop after booking
- American Airlines price drop after booking
- Alaska Airlines price drop after booking
- Southwest price drop after booking
Same flight, lower price
Even if you can't move your dates, the fare on the flight you already chose can drop. When it does, many airlines let you reprice the same flight and keep the difference. That doesn't depend on which day you fly. It depends on noticing the drop before it's gone.
Already booked? Let Fareward keep watching
Forward your airline confirmation to [email protected]. Fareward watches the fare on your exact flights and fare type. If it drops and your fare rules allow it, Fareward files with the airline as your agent, without needing your airline password, and the savings land as airline credit in your name. It covers United, Delta, American, Alaska, Southwest and Hawaiian.
Watching is free. Fareward takes 20% of the savings, only after a credit lands. If the fare never drops, or your fare can't be repriced, you pay nothing. Because the savings usually come back as airline credit rather than cash, it works best for people who'll fly that airline again.
