Delta eCredit Explained: How to Find, Use, and Not Lose It
Quick answer
A Delta eCredit is an electronic credit with a dollar value that you can apply to a future Delta ticket and its government taxes and fees. You redeem it at delta.com/redeem (no transaction fee online) or through Delta reservations (fees may apply).
How long it lasts depends on why you got it:
- You voluntarily cancelled: valid for 1 year from the original ticket date, minus any applicable cancellation fees.
- Delta cancelled, significantly delayed or changed your flight and you chose an eCredit instead of a refund: valid for 5 years from the date of issue.
Each eCredit has its own terms, so check the expiration on yours.
Where Delta eCredits come from
- Cancelling a changeable ticket. On Main Classic and higher fares from the US and Canada, the unused value becomes an eCredit.
- Changing to a lower fare. If you change to a flight that costs less, Delta issues an eCredit for the difference. That includes repricing the same flight after a fare drop. See Delta price drop after booking.
- Delta disruptions. If Delta cancels or significantly changes your flight and you don't rebook, you can choose an eCredit instead of a refund.
Delta Main Basic (basic economy) generally can't be changed after the 24-hour risk-free period, so it usually doesn't produce a fare-drop credit.
How to find your Delta eCredit
- Signed in: eCredits linked to your SkyMiles profile show up in your account wallet.
- Not signed in: at delta.com/redeem, look up the eCredit by its eCredit number (in your flight receipt email) or by last name and phone number. Then validate it by entering the original ticket holder's first and last name.
How to use a Delta eCredit
- Go to delta.com/redeem and look up your eCredit.
- Select the eCredit you want to use and continue to flight search.
- Choose your flights. The eCredit is applied to the price.
- On Review and Pay, confirm the eCredit and pay any remaining balance. If the new flight costs more than the credit, you pay the difference.
- Check the confirmation, where the eCredit appears in the amount-charged breakdown.
What a Delta eCredit can't be used for
Per Delta:
- Only Delta tickets. eCredits apply to future Delta ticket purchases and government-imposed taxes and fees, not other fees such as checked baggage.
- No award travel. eCredits can't be combined with mileage redemptions, including Award Travel or Miles + Cash.
- Mostly not through third parties. Most eCredits can't be redeemed at travel agencies, other airlines or other travel websites.
- No cash value.
Delta also limits how many eCredits you can combine. Its booking pages list up to 3 per ticket on an initial purchase and 2 per ticket on a change. Check the current limit when you book.
How not to lose a Delta eCredit
- Note the expiration the day you receive it. For voluntary cancellations, the clock runs from the original ticket date, not from when you cancelled.
- Residual value keeps the original expiry. If you use part of an eCredit, the leftover generally keeps the original expiration date, per the eCredit terms.
- Use it in the original passenger's name. Delta asks you to validate the original ticket holder's name, so check the name rules on your credit.
Turning a Delta fare drop into an eCredit
If you booked Main Classic or higher directly with Delta and the fare on your flight drops, you can change to the same flight at the lower price. There's no change fee on those fares from the US and Canada, and Delta issues an eCredit for the difference. Most travelers never check, so the drop goes unclaimed.
Already booked? Let Fareward keep watching
Forward your airline confirmation to [email protected]. Fareward watches the fare on your exact flights and fare type. If it drops and your fare rules allow it, Fareward files with the airline as your agent, without needing your airline password, and the savings land as airline credit in your name. It covers United, Delta, American, Alaska, Southwest and Hawaiian.
Watching is free. Fareward takes 20% of the savings, only after a credit lands. If the fare never drops, or your fare can't be repriced, you pay nothing. Because the savings usually come back as airline credit rather than cash, it works best for people who'll fly that airline again.
